The current Cases filed are growing rapidly as a result of the recent win in the Privy Court, UK, the Apex Court, which confirmed 'Standing' of Barbudan Citizens regarding environmental issues and by proxy land use. This challenge of 'standing' was brought to court by the Attorney General, Antigua Barbuda Airport Authority and the Development Control Authority whom attempted to silence Mr John Mussington & Ms Jackie Frank from challenging the construction of a private jet airport strip without the required Environmental Impact Assessments or following the laws of Antigua & Barbuda. Jackie & John won their case on behalf of all Barbudans but also set a precedent for the region and an example to the world. The fight for environmental justice and the right to Self Determination continues. Much hinges on the Communal Land Tenure system which has operated in Barbuda for Millenia. Most recently this practice was taken up by the decendants of African's whom make up 95% of the population. The thought process is that the land is owned in common by the Barbuda people, not least, as a reparations for being stolen and enslaved from the mother continent. The Slave Owning Family 'Codrington' indicated it best to leave Barbuda to its inhabitants upon Emancipation. Barbudans have been self sufficient since then.
The Barbuda Council was established in 1976 by the Barbuda Local Government Act. It is an 11-member body consisting of nine directly elected and two ex officio (Barbuda's House and Senate representatives in the national Parliament) members who serve four-year terms.
